Dog and cat hair. Clogged drain?

Dear Darcie, I love my dogs and cats but their hair, along with my hair, in the sinks and showers are a problem. I hate to use Drano in my house. Is there anything that will unclog a drain but without those types of chemicals? (An aside to that, I live in California, we call Reno “Drano”.) Jet

Dear Jet, Talk about timing being everything! I just unclogged the drain in my bathroom, it was moving slow. A plumber told me that it’s not the hair that starts the clog, it’s the oil in the hair and the oil that we wash off our bodies and faces. Once the oil builds up, soap scum helps make a perfect trap for the hair and then you have a clog.

It’s easy. Heat 3 quarts or more (I use a gallon of water for each drain) to about the temp you’d used for hot tea, too hot to touch but not boiling. Squirt a nice big squirt of Dawn dish washing liquid into the water. Pour it down your sink and wait to the count of 30. Then run hot water for about a minute.

This has worked like a charm for me for a lot of years. If you do this once a month in all your drains, you probably won’t have any more clogged drains at all, depends on how many pets and people in your house, you might want to do it every week if there are lots of bodies in the house. Costs a few pennies a month to have fast and clear drains.

Then you can shop at SitStay.com with the money you saved! :-) – Darcie

(An aside, I used to live in Reno and still have family living there. I love the people and the view of the mountains from outside downtown. I drained a few dollars there myself.)
