He is much smarter than the two spaniels we had before him, and much more ADD and energetic. When he was a puppy I could not find a dog food he'd eat, and I refused to 'give him something better' from the table, so he was really skinny, and often cranky, although never agressive, and always stole food from the counters and tables. In obedience class he would get defiant. He was hungry all the time, but would only eat the dog food as a last resort. I was throwing away a fortune in uneaten food, and we were both not happy. One day, while reading the gazillionth dog food label, I had an AH-HAA moment. Both of our spaniels died from autoimmune disease that made their final days miserable. They were difficult to train, and one had aggressive tendencies. When we were kids, my husband and I each had a couple of wonderful mutt dogs that were healthy until old age took them, and anxious to please. That's why we got a mixed Beagle. Those dogs never got dog food, they ate leftovers of what we ate. So I started feeding Bucky a dinner of meat or fish, veggie and a carbo. Peas and rice get spread across the floor, so usually corn,bread or potato. His favorite foods are Salmon,black beans, asparagus, rotissirrie chicken, mashed potatos and green beans. For breakfast he gets an egg or an oz of Cheese, and a vitamin pill. The food is what we eat, not scraps, and cooked, to avoid food born diseases. Sometimes he gets french toast with berries, or whatever casserole we've all been smelling cook for an hour. He loves my homemade spaghetti marinara! When I changed his diet, Bucky's whole attitude changed. He's eager to please, affectionate,clever and gregarious. He loves obience classes. After 8 months, he's lean and muscular, with a shiny coat, white teeth, fresh breath and no gas! Its really true - good healthy food brings us together, and makes us happy!
