"I take my pups out everywhere I can. You might take a risk of her getting sick, you take a bigger risk of not being socialize properly and extensively."

Please do not take this advice, it's absolutely terrible. If your puppy has not received all of it's vaccinations it runs a risk of death which is much more common in some areas than others. I've lost two pups to parvo this way, a virus that can live on dogs and even on inanimate objects for years. Listen to your veterinarian's advice about the risks in your area, maybe it is not so widespread where you live, but do not ignore the threat of mortal illness for an early chance of socialization. Dogs can learn at all ages with the right technique and patience. Unless you are more worried about being sued, then go ahead; surrender an innocent life in exchange for your selfishness and impatience. Lea

Hi Darcie- I read your post, I am trying your technique, but I am having the same issues. Maggie, our 10 week old black lab/german shepherd mix) wants to bite me (well, it feels like she is trying to take my head off). She growls and bites. At first I thought it was play, but now I am not sure. I tried the "ignore her", "calm her", and crate her (this is the worst, she is like a little terror in the crate...whines cries, barks and when you take her out, she bites even harder). I called a few dog trainers, but they are really bad at getting back. We've met a few other dogs in our neighborhood, she is submissive around them (tail goes down and then she gets a little defensive/fearful). So I am worried that with her biting and her submissiveness, it will become even more of a problem ( not to mention the jumping up on people...that too is going to be a tricky problem). We've had her for 2 weeks, she is nothing like our last dog, who was easy to train and pretty calm. She does have her sweet moments, but I don't want to have a dog that is a liability. :( ~ tracy (Also, all the puppy advice says get them socialized early, but the vet says don't let her around other dogs until at least her 2nd round of shots, I don't know anyone else in my area that well, so do you have any suggestions for how to socialize her now so I don't miss some window of opportunity?)

Dear Tracy, Can you take her back to where you got her if she's too much for you? I'd suggest strongly that you do if you feel that you're not up to working with her. The way you describe it, she's over the top for a 10 week old up. If you don't want to take her back, then keep working on it. Keep looking for help, it sounds like you need it. Feed raw food, getting a good raw diet into her may make a world of difference. (Study a bit so you know you're doing it right, pups need more veggies than adults.) I take my pups out everywhere I can. You might take a risk of her getting sick, you take a bigger risk of not being socialize properly and extensively. I have to say, and I'm very careful about saying things like this, she sounds like too much for your house. Consider taking her back. And if you don't, read, study, find help! This is going to be a big dog. You will want her to be good. - Darcie

Chris- I too just picked up a GSD pup. He is 12 weeks in a couple days and I got him at 8 weeks. He learned Sit, Lay, Rollover, Wait, off, and Take it. However when we aren't training with treats in hand and I say off. He continues to nip and bite at my legs, hands, and clothes. I say no and try and ignore him and it doesn't work. My GF and I have tried this and she has worked on the ouch method but nothing. The louder I scream NO! and ignore him or get in his face and yell no, he gets testy and barks at me and kind of tries to bite. hes amazing on a leash, and with his tricks and other people. Its when we are just sitting around and call him over, or when we walk by. Am I doing something wrong????? HEEEELP. I want to start an obedience and other classes but am going to wait until hes done with his shots. John

Dear John, I don't know who Chris is but I'll try to help. :-)
Everything you say you're doing when he starts biting is making him more excited and he will bite and nip more...yelling (barking) at puppies makes them crazy....you already have figured this out. So what to do instead? Be calm. Calm the puppy, either hold him still until he calms. The second he calms let him go. Or put him in a crate for a tiny time out, it only takes seconds for puppies.
I'd guess more than anything else, you're not fast enough for him when you're training. He wants to go faster and is showing you his frustration. Teach calmness and try to speed up when you're training. And this might help, too.
Check out this old post, it's as fresh and helpful today as the day I wrote it. Go to this page:

Hi Darcie
You don't know me but I am a dog trainer and dog lover in the Seattle area and subscribe to the SitStay newsletter. I have been reading your newsletter for a long time now and just wanted to say that I thoroughly enjoy hearing about your daily antics, which obviously involve dogs and people (surprise, surprise). I love that you use and promote positive training methods and know that your little Frankie is going to grow into a well-mannered and loving canine good citizen. How could he not with such a knowledgeable dog owner. Keep posting those wonderful stories!
