A training tip: Who knows a trick?
This is a self taught training tip. Your dog teaches himself. All you need for this trick is a little time and a lot of yummy treats. Or your dog’s regular meal portioned out in bites. Remember that after the trick is learned, you do not need a treat each time. Praise is a fantastic reward.
(Use clicker training for fastest results. Please make sure that you read a book or watch a DVD before starting clicker training. You will create bad behavior as quickly as good if you don’t know what you’re doing.)
A word to the wise: When your dog does the trick at your request, stop and do it again later. He has done what you wanted, let him think about it.
Give your dog three treats: One, two, three. Quiet voice, please. Say, “Who knows a trick?” Wait for something, anything to happen. When it does. This thing can be a sit, a speak, a roll over, a snuggle, a touch, lifting a paw, any movement at all, anything. Treat. Ask again, “Who knows a trick?” Then wait. When it happens again. Treat.
In the beginning of training, you ask for a trick and get it immediately, treat, treat, treat…. this is called a jackpot. This trick can be taught to several dogs at one time.
This is a marvelous and most happy parlor trick for the SitStay Dogs. Family, friends, passersby, and dog lovers are highly entertained. With our bunch, the first one to do the trick gets the first treat. After that it’s an all out competition to see who gets the next treat. Tons of tricks and excitement for everyone. The more you do this, the more tricks your dogs will come up with. Just let them learn. If your dog does the same trick day after day, don’t treat for that trick any more. Wait for something else. Be patient, you’ll get new tricks and then treat. Have Fun!
